It was inspired by several real-life incidents. In ancient Greek mythology, Elpis is said to be the only one left in Pandora's Box, where various calamities are said to have jumped out of it, and it is a word that can be translated as "hope" as a prediction of good things and "omen/foreshadowing" as a prediction of evil things and disasters.
